Research and Background

It can be frustrating to have an excellent game idea but no setting to put it in. Take Korric’s Hall for example. Great idea but if we want to fill it out further, we’re going to need to do some research. To start, the original hotel on which the adventure hook is based is located in Farmington, New Mexico and some quick googling will get us some information about the area but alot of it is modern advertising. Not useful for our purposes and it can be time consuming to wade through all the links Google can provide. What we need are anthropology resources.

Luckily there’s a site named Anthropology Resources on the Internet. Give it a minute to load, it is a tad slow, but once it does there’s a terrific directory. In this case, I’m clicking “Archaeology by Regions” North America: United States. 30 seconds tells me that the area was once inhabited by the Anasazi and a few more minutes gives me a few details on the Bralani nomads that sometimes help, sometimes plague Korric and his enterprise:

Bralani nomads are actually a fragment of a larger culture to the northwest of Korric’s Hall. They patrol and protect the south and east borders of the larger Daralest realm, or place of the People in their own language. There’s a great drought in progress, spanning some fifty to seventy-five years, which is fragmenting the Realm and the Bralani are acting with more and more autonomy as they pull away culturally from the main Daralest civilization.

One of the Bralani leaders, Ratanreos Woodquester, is agitating for a complete break and completely independant Bralani society. A respected leader of some forty-plus years, Woodquester is gaining many followers amongst the combative youth of the nomads. This bodes ill for the area around Korric’s Hall.
